We hosted individuals from many different agencies and colleges throughout Arkansas. The purpose of this event was to sensitize us to the day-to-day realities of life faced by people with low-incomes and to motivate us to become involved in activities which help reduce poverty in this country.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We would like to thank all those who participated. Some of the tools were well known to all, such as YouTube and Wikipedia.  Heith Hennel of Valencia Community College uses these (and many more) tools in common sense ways to get students excited about learning and  to encourage bonding with other students.  &lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;One innovative method of teaching students about employability is for students to make surveys about good customer service conduct and then collect information.  The student becomes a "secret shopper" and  records answers  about his/her service received in a specific business.  This exercise not only teaches the student a skill like Excel or html programming, but it can teach the student about becoming a better employee.  &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Hennel also discussed an activity with Excel to learn about retirement saving while also learning about formulas in a spreadsheet.  Students were surprised to see the impact that earlier savings might have on their future financial wealth.  Both activities, customer service surveys and retirement calculators, show relevancy in learning. The college implemented a Service Learning Resource Center that emphasized service learning projects and increased retention of freshman. As a matter of fact, the retention rate of the freshman in the first group was 70.6% They used an academy model where each student had to complete two high impact projects in the first 30 hours of attending Queensborough Community College. Chuck Becker, Library Director at PCC discussed the need for a quick and easy assessment tool for Information Literacy Competencies. PCC has six campuses in Tucson with a total enrollment of 71,000 students.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"&gt;&lt;b&gt;Benefits&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Ease of design&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Simplicity for those being assessed&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Fast response gathering&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Excellent for Large Amounts of Assessment&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Ease of data manipulation &lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;Mr. Becker then illustrated the school's usage by showing us the vast number of reports that he and others could generate from the data. It was very enlightening. I have personally used Survey Monkey and think it's a great tool. Although there is a free version, many schools purchase a subscription for a more robust service. I&amp;nbsp; attended this exciting conference and left with ideas to discuss and share.&amp;nbsp; One session I attended was presented by the Central Carolina Technical College (CC Tech).&amp;nbsp; This session was &lt;b&gt;Retention: Now That We Have'em, Let's Keep'em&lt;/b&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The presenters from CC Tech discussed their plan for increasing the retention of students from semester-to-semester and improving graduation/success rates. On October 4th, 214 participants attended the event. They also had two faculty staff development meetings, 1) Perkins Grant Staff meeting, and 2) NPCC Professional Development Meeting. Student Services provided free ice cream which was great for everyone. The two-day conference hosted by Perkins was held at the Hilton Little Rock Metro Center. Attendees from colleges around the state left with great ideas for bringing in students of both genders into programs that are currently non-traditional.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Resources distributed at the conference included binders containing samples of advertising, information about WomenTech resources, and a look at City College of San Francisco's recruitment and retention success plans. ROCN, Revitalizing Our Commmunity Now, was formed by ATU Ozark to promote a sustainable and thriving community. It only makes sense that this group and Sustainable Communities through College Leadership team should join together for a discussion. The workshops are done to raise student awareness on different areas that may benefit them. I have to give credit to Jennie Miller at Ozarka college for allowing me to borrow her information for my PowerPoints. She has been wonderful about sharing with me! I continuously check out Ozarka’s website for useful tips and information. &lt;?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:'Times New Roman','serif';color:#1f497d;"&gt;We held our first workshop called “Get the Job: What Employers Want”. It was a huge success. It gave students information about first impressions, resume writing tips, cover letters, interviews, interview dress code, frequently asked questions, and thank-you letters. One unique thing we provided for the students who attended the workshop was the opportunity to participate in a “mock interview”. I contacted members from the our community as well as members from surrounding communities to come in and help out. The students loved it. I tried to set up each student with someone from their field so that they could make a point of contact and a good first impression. Like I told the student, “you never know when the person interviewing you will actually be looking to hire someone and if you make a good impression on the person who is interviewing you then they just may give you a call!!” We also provided feedback to the students after the mock interviews to let the students know what their strong points were and what areas they needed to improve in. I also presented this workshop on our Warren campus. After the workshop on both campuses, I let the student’s know that I was available to assist them in writing or touching up their resume. They took full advantage. I keep a log of how many students I serve and a total of 64 students were helped with their resume. We viewed this as a success!&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:'Times New Roman','serif';color:#1f497d;"&gt;We also held a Financial Management Workshop last year two days prior to Pell disbursement. We brought the President of McGehee Bank in to talk to the students about the importance of saving their money. He talked about CD’s and Savings Bonds. He also discussed how credit scores affected obtaining loans. Many students have asked that we do this workshop again. I had only scheduled the speaker to stay for 30 minutes but questions kept pouring in and he stayed for over an hour. At the end of each survey I give an evaluation to see what areas we need to improve in. I had NO negative response on this workshop!!&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:'Times New Roman','serif';color:#1f497d;"&gt;Finally I am attaching a PowerPoint called “13 Ways to Flunk Out of College”. We always talk to students about how they should be attending classes and studying and I feel that they have heard this so much until it pretty much goes in one ear and out the other. This workshop takes an opposite approach to let students know exactly what will cause them to fail. I will be presenting this workshop in mid September. &lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:'Times New Roman','serif';color:#1f497d;"&gt;I have also included the “Early Alert” form that we use on our campus. I email it to the instructors at the beginning of each semester. If an instructor identifies a student to be “at risk” for any of the reasons listed he/she then emails me form with the students name and information on it. I send a letter to the students asking them to come in and see me to that we can try to get them back on the right track. In 10 days, if I have no response from the student, I then call and try to get the student to come in.  &lt;/span&gt;We wanted to know about their experiences here on our campus – both the good and the bad ones!&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;The Perkins team decided to create a student evaluation form that allowed students to express their opinion.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Our idea was simple…..it is easier to “retain” a happy student!&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;We knew we would be unable to meet every complaint right away, but if we showed the students that we were genuinely concerned, we felt that it would raise morale and let the students know that their opinion mattered to us!&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Guess what….it worked!!!!&lt;?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman', 'serif'; FONT-SIZE: 12pt"&gt;As the Retention Specialist, I went around to each classroom and handed out the evaluations to ensure that we received feedback from all the students.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;The response was overwhelming!!&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;We were able to assess the areas that we needed improvement in and areas in which we were doing a great job according to students.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman', 'serif'; FONT-SIZE: 12pt"&gt;At the end of the evaluation, we gave students the opportunity to tell us what they would change about their experience and what could be done to make their experience more enjoyable here at UAM College of Technology – McGehee.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Some of the things students wanted were:&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;more comfortable furniture in the student center, another microwave in the student center, more parking, faculty to be more accessible during office hours, and wireless internet capabilities.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman', 'serif'; FONT-SIZE: 12pt"&gt;At the start of fall 2010 we have added an additional microwave to the student center, we will have an area with 50 additional parking spaces available in late September, wireless internet will be up and running in a few weeks, and all faculty members have been asked to spend one office hour each week in the student center.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;We are attempting to encourage faculty/student interaction.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Some other things we found that students had a problem with were a lot easier to address such as:&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;offer more general education classes on the McGehee campus at night, have instructors notify students in advance when classes will be cancelled, and provide more assistance for students during admissions.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman', 'serif'; FONT-SIZE: 12pt"&gt;We have not been able to address everything but we are still working on it.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt; Twenty-one participants attended on Day One and nineteen participants joined us for Day Two. The same topic was offered on a choice of days to allow for the most attendance.  The subject was "Using Social Networks to Increase Non-Trad Participation and Retention."  During the webinar, a few polls were displayed for participants to add their feedback on experience and needs.  The results:&lt;br /&gt;1.  Do you have a personal Facebook page?  80% said "Yes"&lt;br /&gt;2.  Does your school have a Facebook Presence?  65% said "Yes"&lt;br /&gt;3.  Does your school use any type of social networking online? (not just a website...for instance, Ning or a Yahoo group)  42.5% said "I have no idea", 27.5% said "Yes", 27.5% said "No"&lt;br /&gt;4. Have you ever blogged or tweeted?  79.4% said "No".&lt;br /&gt;5.  Did you use Word Press, Blogger, Twitter, or Other?  Word Press (1 person), Blogger (2 people), Twitter(2), Other (5)&lt;br /&gt;6.  Are you a member of an online group? Yahoo 12.8%, Google 5%, Ning 0%, No online group 72%&lt;br /&gt;7.  "I would like to have more assistance in setting up a social network for recruitment and retention."  47% said "Yes", 42% said "No", 11%- no response&lt;br /&gt;8.  "I am interested in learning how instructors can use technology in the classroom for teaching."  50% said "Yes"&lt;br /&gt;9.  "I need one-on-one assistance with a specific tool we have talked about today."
