Bronx Community College Uses Web 2.0 in Health Science Programs

At the recent StemTech conference in Orlando, I attended a session called Classroom to Clinic: Bridging the Gap Interactively.  The health science educators of Bronx Community College used tools such as SoftChalk, Flip videos, Elluminate Scribblar, and Voice Thread to instruct.  They said that it wasn't easy at first. They went through several different models and lots of training to reach the point that they are at today.  The major points I noted were that instructors needed more than an overview or one-time training and that students make great "instructional technology tutors".  Another very important statement made by the presenter was that students don't read email;  they DO read Twitter and Facebook.

A nursing instructor from the Bronx Community College demonstrated how she uses her videos to teach her students.  It was great to see her videos done with the Flip video camera that many times featured her own grandmother as a surly patient.   This tool is extremely inexpensive and easy to use.  Overall, I was impressed with the SoftChalk website they use for the dental hygiene program and the enthusiasm of the nursing instructor in using technologies.  After watching the demo, I'm "sold" on using the Flip camera in the classroom.
