Innovations Conference 2010- Sharing Information, Part 3

Making Academic Rigor Supported, Visible, and Attainable was presented by Queensborough Community College (QCC). The college implemented a Service Learning Resource Center that emphasized service learning projects and increased retention of freshman. As a matter of fact, the retention rate of the freshman in the first group was 70.6% They used an academy model where each student had to complete two high impact projects in the first 30 hours of attending Queensborough Community College. The service learning projects were integrated into curriculum, were meaningful to the community, and ended with reflection activities.

  1. I love the idea of service learning and would love to see our school participate more. I think service learning is often confused with community service and as the QCC website points out, they are not the same thing. I was very impressed with the retention rate of the students who participated in the QCC group. Great job!
